In… out… in… out.

Keep your breathing steady.

Focus on his hand in yours.

It’s warm… but feels wrong, not the way Sebastian’s felt.

Fuck that monster. Stop thinking about him, Persephone. Think about Jamie, how he is here for you, how he is guiding you towards sanctuary—relief from all of this mess.

“You’re doing great Persie, we’re almost there.” Jamie’s voice was low. If he wasn’t touching me—I would have sworn he was far away. My shallow breaths filled the sack, causing the endless darkness around me to consume me. Step after step, the minutes ticked by, stretching into an eternity.

When you have the chance, you turn and get the hell out of there. Am I clear?

There was something in Sebastian’s words—maybe it was the demanding tone of his voice, or the snarl he let curl around them—but I was not about to bow to his commands any more. That’s what got me here in the first place. He can’t compel me through the bond. To hell with this. I had made it this far—there was no going back now.

“We’re here.”

The darkness lifted, and my eyes adjusted to the dim hallway. Walls—no—stone, it wasn’t a hallway; it was a cave.

“Where are we?” I asked, still trying to take in the surrounding area. Rough stone surrounded us, but at the end of the cavern was a wooden door with golden accents. Celtic knots, etched in gold, twisted along the border of the door.

“The Mother’s crypt.” Cillian spoke up, his hoarse voice filling the cavern. Before I could ask any more questions, the door was ripped open and Jamie ushered me inside.

The room was like an arena. Stone structures towered high above us, making me feel even smaller than I already did. Seven towers encircled us, each of them branded with a unique symbol—some form of Celtic ruin. At the top of the towers, sat seven hunter dressed in white and gold robes similar to Cillian’s, judging the world beneath them. At the base of each of the towers, in a solid black uniform, were two more hunters standing at attention. Soldiers, ready to receive orders.

We entered further into the crypt and my grip on Jamie’s arm became tighter.

“Elder’s of Clan O’Connor,” Cillian addressed the room, his voice cutting the silence like a blade. “For centuries, we have hunted the creatures of the night, putting an end to their bloody reign of terror. Hel has been
